Lord May of Oxford dies, aged 84

From the Clerk:

It is with sadness that I have to tell you that Lord May of Oxford OM, Honorary Liveryman of the Salters’ Company (2002), passed away aged 84 on Tuesday 28 April 2020. He was president of the Royal Society from 2000 until 2005, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government, held joint professorships in University of Oxford and Imperial College London and was also a crossbench member of the House of Lords from 2001 until his retirement in 2017.

He was an extremely well known and much loved figure who took part in Salters’ events with great enthusiasm, and our heartfelt condolences go to Lady Judith May and his daughter Naomi (also known as Nome) at this time.

I believe that his funeral will, under the circumstances, be private but I will of course let you know as and when a Memorial Service is to take place.

Regards,

Tim Smith
Clerk
