80th anniversary of VE Day – 8 May 1945 – we remember…

This week, various events are being held in London and across the UK to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (8th May 1945).  Below is an extract from the 1948 Salters’ Company Livery List, with the dates of death added from the Court minutes or online research.

(Note: as the list below was originally compiled for publication in a Livery List, it is not entirely clear whether there were any members of the Freedom, but not the Livery, who also lost their lives in the war.  Further research would be required to clarify this – a worthwhile future project.)

Air Commodore H.R.H. The Duke of Kent, (Hon. Member 1932), killed in action 25 August 1942.

Lieut. Thomas Anthony Walter Blackwell, Royal Artillery, (Freedom and Livery 1933), killed in action July/August 1942.

Capt. Guy Alistair Callingham, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, (Freedom and Livery 1943), killed in action December 1944.

Capt. Stephen Behrens Cohen, Royal West Kent Regt, (Freedom and Livery 1932), killed in action March 1943.

The Rt. Hon. Walter Francis David Long, Viscount Long of Wraxall, Coldstream Guards, (Freedom and Livery 1937), killed in action 23 September 1944.
